Kauai 2023–Backpacking Kalalau Trail

 I’m playing catch up now.

Hiking this trail was amazing. I loved it.

It was so much easier hiking back.

We loved being with the Dittos. We are both, soooo much alike and we have so much to learn from them!

Things we talked about:

Missions lessons

Ways we’ve compromised as couples in our marriages

Which sibilants would enjoy doing this hike

Put a pin on the map where you’ve felt God

A line from your patriarchal blessing that has impacted you

 My faith crisis

To name a few!

Casey and Katalyn greeted us with gifts and cheers and soap! We then got a burger and one last shave ice.

We got on a plane at 9:30 and tried to sleep some as we flew back to the main land.

Kauai 2023–Backpacking The Kalalau Trail

Our night sleep on Anini Beach wasn’t the best. Though overall, I think I had better sleep than normal! I prayed a lot about our last three nights in Hawaii just because I knew those would be rough night sleeps.

But it rained, and the cats, and the roosters, and yelling. So much noise.  We woke up and were sure the trail was closed!

We made peace with that and started walking along the beach. Kelly refreshed the page and it had REOPENED!!! I ran back to the campsite to pack up quickly!

Just an hour later we were beginning our 11 mile backpacking trek. And it was amazing! I loved every single mile but 8. I just loved everything about it. We started at 9:30 and got to the camp site at 5:30. We watched the sunset. Set up camp. And then took sleeping medicine so we could fall asleep!

Kauai 2023-Trail Closed, Anini Beach

We woke up this morning and excitedly headed to the Kalalau Trail. But when we got there it was closed. We didn’t know that could happen. We were all so sad. We walked along the beach for a little deciding whether or not to stay and see if they reopen or just go do something else.

I did ask a rooster to scratch its neck if it was going to reopen. It did immediately, so I felt hopeful.

In the end, we decided to bag that day. We went and got a snow cone and then went paddle boarding. Then we headed to Anini Beach. We set up camp and went snorkeling. We swam with a turtle for 10 minutes! Watched it eat and poke its head up, and just swim. That was magical. The beach was beautiful as well as the sunset. We had our mountain house dinner and then watched the stars. It was a good day. But there was the undertone of bummer feelings.
